What does laser skin rejuvenation involve?
Laser skin rejuvenation is a cosmetic procedure used to stimulate the healing processes deep within the skin. It can be used to treat a variety of conditions, including the following:
• Mild surgical and acne scars
• Enlarged blood vessels
• Brown spots
• Sun damage
Sills Dermatology uses the Palomar Icon™ laser made by CYNOSURE®. The system includes a device called the “Skintel Melanin Reader” that determines the average density of melanin in the skin. The laser itself works by targeting pigment in the patient’s skin while leaving other tissues unharmed.
The Icon also includes a technology called ThreeForMe™ that enables the doctor to treat several different skin problems during one session. ThreeForMe™ lets the doctor treat different problems while making just two passes with the laser. During the first pass, the laser emits IPL beams to treat pigmentation problems including rosacea and age spots. During the second pass, the laser emits “microbeams” that stimulate the collagen and elastin in the patient’s skin and thus produce a tauter and smoother appearance. The second pass also reduces wrinkles and scars.
A treatment usually lasts about half an hour, and most patients will need one to three treatments to get the desired results. As the laser system also includes technology to keep the patient comfortably cool, most will find the treatment at least tolerable. Many patients report that the laser itself feels like a rubber band snapping against their skin.
What is Pelleve?
Pelleve is a skin rejuvenation treatment that involves the use of radiofrequency energy. It was approved by the FDA in 2009. A handheld device emits radiofrequency energy that heats the deeper layers of the skin and stimulates the production of collagen. Pelleve can thus be used to treat conditions like the following:
• Sagging skin
• Fine lines
Pelleve is also quite pleasurable; many patients have said that it feels like a hot stone massage. Treatment time depends on the size of the area being treated. For example, doing the whole face takes between 45 and 60 minutes. Most patients get three to five treatments and undergo one treatment per month.
